Self Portrait Xll (2023)
Featured in NUDUS ERECTUS, Brent Ray Fraser’s first solo New York exhibition, Self Portrait XII represents a significant work from the artist’s ongoing exploration of identity, embodiment, and self-representation through his signature Brush Stroke Technique.
Based on a photograph by longtime collaborator Roger B. Williams, the painting depicts Fraser inside The Silo Studio, his live-work creative space in Langley, British Columbia. Williams documented Fraser’s artistic journey for many years, creating an important visual archive of the artist’s life and evolving practice.
Vibrant reds collide against cool blue-green tones, while direct body impressions integrated throughout the surface reinforce Fraser’s belief that the body is not merely the subject of the artwork, but an active participant in its creation.
Part portrait, part performance, and part personal document, Self Portrait XII stands as a powerful example of Fraser’s distinctive contribution to contemporary figurative painting.
