Summit Recline (2023)
Featured in NUDUS ERECTUS, Brent Ray Fraser’s first solo exhibition in New York City, Summit Recline brings together several recurring themes within the artist’s practice: the male figure, the Canadian landscape, personal history, and the transformation of the body into a tool for artistic creation.
Based on a photograph by longtime collaborator Roger B. Williams, the painting was created during the final year of Williams’ life and serves as both an artwork and a tribute to a close creative partnership that helped shape Fraser’s artistic journey.
A reclining blue figure merges with a dramatic mountain landscape beneath a blazing sky of reds, oranges, and yellows. Through bold colour contrasts and expressive mark making, Fraser blurs the boundary between body and environment, suggesting a deep connection between human experience and the natural world.
Inspired by the mountains and wilderness of British Columbia, Summit Recline stands as a meditation on friendship, memory, place, and the enduring landscapes that shape us.
