Storm Trooper (2018)
Recognized as one of Brent Ray Fraser’s most ambitious figurative works, Storm Trooper reinterprets an iconic symbol of popular culture through the artist’s signature Brush Stroke Technique. Rather than fan art, the painting explores themes of authority, mythology, performance, and cultural memory.
Standing an imposing 84 × 112 inches, the work demanded extraordinary physical endurance and control. Created over more than a week, Fraser repeatedly climbed ladders, balanced above the canvas, and applied paint through body-driven mark making, transforming the act of painting into a performance of stamina and precision.
The heavily textured monochromatic surface creates a dynamic tension between abstraction and representation. Thick accumulations of paint and energetic gestures allow the familiar figure to emerge gradually from the canvas, emphasizing both its cinematic presence and the physicality of Fraser’s process.
A subtle reinterpretation of the Stormtrooper’s weapon through Fraser’s recurring “cockgun” motif introduces humour, satire, and personal symbolism, transforming a familiar cultural icon into a distinctly original work. The result is a large-scale portrait that merges contemporary figurative painting, performance art, and popular mythology.
