ABSTRACT STUDIES

A visceral exploration of movement, instinct, physical endurance, and mark making. These works are created through Brent Ray Fraser’s highly distinctive body based painting techniques where the human form becomes both brush and instrument, transforming motion itself into imageSpanning floor based compositions, suspended wall works, action painting, and experimental mixed media processes, the Abstract Studies collection captures the direct relationship between body, surface, gravity, balance, and material experience. Using carefully controlled gestures alongside instinctive physical movement, Fraser creates compositions charged with rhythm, tension, energy, and momentum.

Many works are produced through Fraser’s custom engineered performance apparatus systems, including suspended ladder structures and wall scaling techniques requiring strength, precision, and stability. With the body covered in paint, movement becomes a form of suspended mark making where physical contact leaves behind layered impressions, gestures, and atmospheric traces impossible to replicate through traditional methods alone.

Alongside these physically demanding processes, Fraser also incorporates brushes, hands, custom tools, and action painting techniques inspired by the history of abstract expressionism and contemporary performance art. The resulting works exist between painting, dance, endurance, and sculpture where instinct and control collide to create immersive visual experiences filled with movement, surface depth, and emotional intensity.
